Two experiences were made in order to evaluate the postharvest quality of UC 157F1 green asparagus during the 89/90 season. During the first trial the influence of the harvest date on the initial spear quality was measured, taking in consideration different lengths of storage in polymeric packages. Five different harvest dates were considered: sept. 30, oct. 20, nov. 9. nov. 29 and dec. 19 and the asparagus were kept at 2 deg for 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. With the spears of the fourth harvest date, an evaluation of the shelf life of asparagus at 18 deg after storage period of 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days, at 2 deg, was carried out. On both trials the measured variables were: visual quality and weight loss. On the first trial, membrane permeability and chlorophyll content were also evaluated in search of an objective quality parameter. Results indicated that there is a significant effect of the harvest date upon the visual quality of spears quality decreased with each late harvest date. No clear results were obtained regarding membrane permeability, to use it as objective quality measure. The storage period significantly increased weight loss and also affect the deterioration of the visual quality grading. Nevertheless, it does not clearly influenced the membrane permeability and the chlorophyll changes. The asparagus shelf life at ambient temperature is reduced proportionally to the length of storage time at 2 deg.
