Ethofenprox and six synthetic pyrethroids (alphamethrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, fenpropathrin, fenvalerate, and S-1844) were evaluated against rice hopper pests in laboratory/greenhouse at IRRI [International Rice Research Institute, Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] from 1981 to 1986. In contact toxicity, ethofenprox showed more than 80% mortality of BPH [brown planthopper] and GLH [green leafhopper], while fenpropathrin and S-1844 showed more than 80% mortality of GLH. Others showed less than 80%. In foliar spray, cypermethrin only showed more than 80% mortality of GLH. Others showed less than 80%. In the field trials at IRRI in 1985, BPH population was usually lower in ethofenprox-treated plots than in untreated plots and in deltamethrin-treated ones. Deltamethrin showed BPH resurgence evidently. GLH population was lower in both ethofenprox- and deltamethrin-treated plots than in untreated ones. WBPH [whitebacked planthopper] population was lower in ethofenprox-treated plots than in both untreated and deltamethrin-treated ones. Deltamethrin evidently showed WBPH resurgence. Thus, profenprox is concluded to be effective on GLH, BPH, and WBPH without hopper resurgence in the field.
