The first swelling intensity and the decompaction capacity in moistening-drying cycles are shown to depend on the initial physical status: they increase with higher initial density and decrease with higher initial moisture content. An experimental method is proposed to determine critical compaction levels for soils differing by their moisture content, as well as a method of forecasting by calculations the decompaction of soils with properties similar to soils under study.
