The main objectives of this work were to determine the intensity-frequency-duration curves for rains in Chillan and use them to define the surface runoff of a small hydrographic watershed located in the area of Huape, 20 Km., west from Chillan, using three methodologies: Rational, Soil Conservation Service and Cook. At the same time, it was established the time of concentration by eight different equations. The intensity-frequency-duration curves were built using Chow-Gumbel model. By means of a simple regression analysis, it was determined the factibility of employing that information in the area of Huape. The limmigraphic information recorded at Huape watershed was compared with those estimated by the Rational, Soil Conservation Service and Cook methods. The maximum runoff produced by 14 rains previously selected was calculated. The results point out that the intensity-frequency-duration curves are easier to be obtained when the hourly pluviographic information is available. Out of eight equations used in the calculation of time of concentration, none of those were closer to the obtained values of graphical register. Comparing the estimated values with the measured ones, it was possible to verify that the Rational method was more exact than the Soil Conservation Service (U.S.D.A), evaluated for the average intensity of the rain as well as for the maximum intensity in an hour.
