A brief report addresses 2 timely issues of interest and concern by nutrition scientists and consumers alike, viz.: differences and similiarities between recommended dietary allowances (RDA's) and recommended dietary intakes (RDI's); and the health benefits of lowering blood cholesterol levels. The former describes instances in which the RDI for certain nutrients are substantially lower than the corresponding RDA, and the margin of health safety afforded by the RDA. The latter cites technical studies that confirm that the reduction of blood cholesterol in middle-aged men reduces coronary heart disease risks, stressing that intakes of complex carbohydrates from cereals and legumes should be increased.(wz).
