Fresh matter is not an appropriate relation unit for chlorophyll content: Experience from experiments on effects of herbicide and allelopathic substance.

With increasing concentration, both the herbicide glyphosate and the allelopathic chemical parthenium gradually lowered percent of water content in leaves of Parthenium hysterophorus and Phaseolus aureus and increased dry matter content in their fresh biomass. When the determined chlorophyll content was related to leaf fresh matter false conclusions arose (an increment of chlorophyll content with increasing active substance concentration). An opposite conclusion, which reflected the visually evident reality, was obtained only when dry matter was used as the relation unit. Thus the fresh matter unit should not be used for expressing pigment contents in physiological experiments.
