A solution for agricultural problems is needed, which does not increase the dependence on products from the developed countries, for the economical burden is already unbearable. Protoplast fusion, tissue culture and gene technology are presented as the basic methodology to achieve the breeding goals of the next generation. To increase the production of sugar, cellulose, alcohol, chemical and pharmaceutical products from plants, breeding programs have been initiated, in which biotechnology could contribute with its new methodology. International cooperation and coordination on the scientific, industrial and political level are essential for the application of biotechnology. Newly founded international centres are already utilising modern techniques to solve agricultural problems in the developing countries. These centres should provide the connection to the scientific laboratories of the developed countries.
