In this paper, an assessment is made of how sustainable present disease management practices are; recent events that have shaped thinking on sustainability are discussed and a preferred scenario for developing disease management practices that are sustainable is proposed. Present disease management practices may be grouped into the following broad categories: a) biological practices, including host plant resistance and the use of biological agents or products; b) cultural, mechanical and physical practices: c) chemical practices; and d) regulatory/exclusion practices. The many common goals and characteristics shared between sustainable agricultural systems and IPM-based disease management systems are discussed.
