Decomposition of three green manure species at varying ages and water regimes.

Pot experiment was conducted to determine the biomass productivity, chemical constituents and N mineralizing pattern of three fast growing green manure species (Mucuna, cowpea and Crotolaria). The green manure species differed among each other and over time in biomass production, nodulation and chemical constituents such as N concentration, N yield, lignin content, carbon content and C/N ratio. Cowpea consistently produced the greatest biomass and nodulation, highest N concentration and N yield and lowest C/N ratio among the three green manure species. The pattern and quantity of release of mineralized N was affected by species, age and water regimes after incorporation. Cowpea had the highest N release from the first to the seventh week after incorporation. Sixty-day old green manure released the highest N.
