Effect of leaf pigments on black bean aphid (Aphis fabae Scop.) invasion of red beets.

The work concerned differences in the content of green (chlorophyll a + b) and orange-yellow (carotenoid) pigments in the leaves of 3 red beet cultivars and their effect on Aphis fabae invasion. The greatest numbers of winged and wingless individuals and the greatest numbers of plant attacked by aphids were found in the cultivar Okragly Ciemnoczerwony. In the leaves of this cultivar was found a smaller content of green pigments and higher ratio of carotenoids to chlorophylls. The cultivars Egipski and Czerwona Kula, characterized by lower carotenoids/chlorophylls a + b quotient, were always less invaded by the investigated aphid.
