Many semi-arid areas in Kenya face increasing pressure as a result of population growth and migration from densely populated high-potential areas. Lack of appropriate water conservation techniques for rainfed land use results in crop failures and problems of environmental degradation. This paper provides some preliminary results of a study carried out to evaluate the influence of different farming methods on water loss, soil erosion and crop yields in two different agro-ecological zones in Laikipia district of Kenya.
