This paper reported a study on the availability of dry matter from native pasture in Pontian district, Johore, Peninsular Malaysia for livestock production. The pasture area comprised 700 hectares of reserve area along drainage canals and streams, 56 hectares along the roadside and 3,480 hectares under coconuts. The respective dry matter yields were 18.8, 12.8 and 11.3 t/ha/year. The percentage composition of grasses from graminae family which formed the major edible component of native pasture were respectively 72.3%, 72.2% and 74.5%, giving edible dry matter yields of 13.3, 9.2 and 8.3 t/ha/year respectively. The edible dry matter availability from the total effective pasture area was 37,742 t/year with an average crude protein content of 10.5 per cent. Dry matter production from the native pasture correlated with the rainfall distribution in the district.
