Investigation of tambak water quality and its production has been done along North coast of Java since 1986 to 1988. Water samples were taken from 76 locations, i.e, 6 locations in West Java. Results of water quality analysis indicated that almost all of contents of parameters matched the accepted prawn cultivation criteria, except for some parameters which content has been higher than the water quality criteria, i.e. NH3-N, NO2-N, Zn and Cu. In addition some of these tambak have a salinity content higher or lower than the water quality criteria. However, statistic test with double regression analysis showed that some parameters higher than the water quality criteria did not affect the production of cultivated prawn. This test also indicated that the production of prawn depended on the amount of prawn seedling cultivated and the extra amount of feeding, when water supply and salinity functioned as the growing support. This investigation also resulted in some input for the determination of a water quality criteria for prawn cultivation, i.e. content of Zn from 0.002 mg/l to 0.30 mg/l and NO3-N from 0.06 mg/l to 0.15 mg/l.
