The present paper gives the results of a trial carried out in Eerika cowshed near Tartu. The aim of the trial was to study the possibility of loose housing of dairy cattle in cowshed with cubicles. No damage of hide or injuries occurred among trial cows besides small scratches. The younger cows were more active than older ones. Their behaviour with each other was rather good. Trial cows showed also aggressive behaviour like butting, pushing and circling, however generally this occurred quite seldom. It can be concluded that majority of trial cows were standing and lying down in their own cubicles. Loose housed cows were cleaner than tied cattle. From the concentrate feedbunk trial cows got more or less equal concentrate portions. The appetite of loose housed cows was better than that of tied cows. Thus a conclusion can be drawn that it is really possible to use loose housing of dairy cattle in cowsheds with cubicles if a farm has a concentrate feedbunk. The motion possibility of trial cows affected favourably their health and production.
