Vegetative, productive and qualitative responses of cultivars Schiava, Chardonnay, Cabernet S. and Pinot g. were studied on some vineyards trained on Trentino pergola and pruned with 3 different bud number levels. Schiava variety reduced the % of bud-break and increased the yield/shoot as a consequence of high bud number/ha. The remaining genotypes decreased the fertility and the yield of shoots, showing a weak yield/plant increase associated to large pruning level enhancement. Such a behaviour may justify the reduction of the negative effect on sugar accumulation in berries observed on plant pruned with high bud number. Data clearly show that the tested genotype involved different modulation mechanisms of productivity as a consequence of the intensity of winter pruning. For all varieties, however, in the specific climatic and environmental conditions of our experience, must quality may improve by decreasing the pruning level to about 60-70.000 buds/ha.
