Effects of soil water enviromental stress on some morphological, anatomical and ultrastructural characteristics in wheat roots.

Some morphological, anatomical and ultrastructural changes of wheat roots were found under the condition of soil water environmental stress. The results showed that the growth vigor of wheat roots was weaker and the distance between root hair zone and root tip was shorter under drought stress, while the growth vigor of the roots was better under waterlogging stress, but there were less root hair and fewer rootlets in the roots. Waterlogging for 1-20 days, the number of new roots increases as the days of waterlogging increased, and the aerenchymas were developed in the cortex of root maturation zone after waterlogging for 10 days, which were probably a kind of adaptive response of wheat roots to waterlogging stress. The cell ultrastructures of root tip were the same as that of CK under drought or waterlogging stress, but the cell ultrastructures in maturation zone of the roots were abnormal under waterlogging stress, the organelle was destroyed, and even the cell structure was ruined.
