Certain characteristics of M1 plant were studied. As the dose increased, germination, plant height and number of nodes per plant progressively decreased. The number of branches per plant increase was maximum at 60 Krad and remained steady between 60 and 90 Krad. The maximum pod number per plant was attained at 60 Krad. In the M2 generation, seeds of M1 plant harvested from the primary branch, secondary branch and top branches with the control were grown for further studies. There were slight differeces in germination, seedling height, plant height, pod length, number of nodes per plant and seeds per pod between control and M2 plant. Only the number of branches and pods per plant appeared to be greater in M2 plant than control. Mutation rate in M2 generation of seedling raised from seeds of M1 plant were for yellow seedling and sterility. Mutant rates are quite small and the differences in mutation rate due to position of M2 seeds on branches of M1 plant are not significantly. In the early maturity group, there were significant findings in yield, 1,000 grain weight, days to maturity, days to first flowering, plant height, number of branches per plant, and pods per plant. All the mutant lines were for earliness than control. In the high yield potential group, there were significant findings in yield, 1,000 grain weight, days to maturity, days to first flowering, and plant height but no significant difference in number of branches per plant and pods per plant. Two mutant lines had a higher potential for grain yield as compared with the control.
