Variability in the estimated minimum number of quadrats yielding the asymptote value of diversity in different seaweed communities.

This study explored the variability of the theoretical minimum number of quadrats in sampling seaweed communities. Using 40 data sets obtained from the same number of sites, "diversity-area" curves, instead of the commonly used "species-area" curves were estimated to determine the minimum sample size. Data sets were fitted in a hyperbolic tangent function. The range of the maximum diversity values throughout the Philippines was wide, having no apparent spatial pattern. The range of the estimated mimimum number of quadrats (2/B) in sampling seaweed communities was also wide and found not correlated with diversity, although 80 percent of all the 2/Bs had values less than 20.0 25 sq m quadrats. Brillouin's diversity (H) was found to have significant linear correlation with Shannon-Weiner diversity (H'). Results on looking at the effect of sampling intensity in estimating the model parameters ("diversity-area") showed negative findings. It was shown that it is possible to sample 10 quadrats in a seaweed community and still get the same parameters estimates as sampling 50 quadrats.
