The present study is concerned mainly with the effects of tetraethyl lead on chromosomes of the rat bone marrow cells. The rats were injected with tetraethyl lead in different dosages: 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 mg/kg BW, then left for 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36 hours. It was observed that tetraethyl lead could induce the majority chromatid gap chromatid breakage acentric and ring chromosomes. When the dosages of tetraethyl lead were increased, the number of chromatid gap chromatid breakage and acentric chromosomes were increased with high statistical significance (P<0.01), but no significance for ring chromosome. However, the period from injecting tetraethyl lead into the rat to harvestinging the bone marrow cells were increased, the number of chromatid gap, chromatid breakage and acentric chromosomes were decreased with high statistical significance, and the number of ring chromosomes were increased with high significance. The dosages of tetraethyl lead and period from injecting tetraethyl lead into the rat to harvesting the bone marrow cells could induce the damage and repair of DNA were variable on chromosome as well. The chromatid gap, chromatid breakage and types of chromosome aberration part in the damage and the repair of DNA were variable.
