Two synthetic populations of maize (NS Syn 88/12 and NS Syn 88/14) of broad genetic basis were investigated. Week and non-significant genetic correlations between grain yield and leaf area duration were found in the S1 progeny of both populations. Slightly higher degree of agreement between these traits was found in the HS progeny. The strongest correlations in both populations were found between the leaf area duration and water content in stem, i.e. water content in leaf. Genetic correlations between the S1 and HS progenies for grain yield were medium strong and for leaf area duration strong and highly significant. The application of the selection index helped the identification of desirable genotypes according to several criteria. The most efficient increase of the frequency of desirable alleles could be achieved by the recombination of the genotypes selected on the basis of the values of the selection index and yield of the test crosses.
