Maize fodder was chopped into 2.5 - 4.0 cm pieces and ensiled with and without inoculation of S. [Streptococcus] faecalis, L. [Lactobacillus] plantarum (S-2) and Torulopsis candida. The lactic acid bacterial count increased initially with the inoculation of T. candida. In control silage, the lactic acid content increased to 1.379% whereas with the inoculation of S. faecalis + L. plantarum, the lactic acid content increased to the highest amount (2.190%) on 120th day of ensiling. Acetic acid content increased (1.457%) with the inoculation of T. candida + L. plantarum on the fourth month of ensiling. Hence, for obtaining a stabilized good-quality silage of maize with mixed inoculation of homofermentative lactic acid bacteria, viz. L. plantarum and S. faecalis, and the yeast T. candida would be beneficial.
