Effect of temperature on sprouting and hormonal content of potato tubers.

At 10 and 20 C, some apical buds showed slight spasmodic growth, none was observed for tubers kept at 5 C for one month. Continuous bud growth in tubers stored at 10 and 20 C commenced two to three weeks after temperature treatment while buds on tubers kept at 5 C remained quiescent for 6 weeks regardless of the varieties. Strong apical dominance was exhibited by tubers of var. Red Pontiac and Univeta kept at 10 to 20 C. Significant differences in abscissic acid-like content was observed in tubers of the different varieties kept at 10 and 20 C. Highest level of ABA-like substances was observed in tubers stored at 5 C. However, concentration of the inhibitor decreased with length of storage except var. Red Pontiac which showed an increase of 32% in ABA-like content two months after low temperature treatment. Gibberellin-like content of the tubers was lowest in var. (11.1672 microgram/g.d.w.) stored at 10 C for one month. Tubers of variety Ilona kept at 10 C for one month gave the highest GA/ABA ratio (253.26) while the lowest was obtained in tubers of var. Cosima kept at 5 C for one month (1.08). Significant increase in GA/ABA ratio of tubers kept at 5 C for two months coincided with the onset of sprouting in most varieties at this temperature.
