Distribution of tungro virus in infected rice cultivars with different levels of resistance.

The distribution of tungro virus in the susceptible 'TN 1' and 'ADT 31', moderately resistant 'IR 50' and resistant 'TNAU 831520' rice plants was studied by recovering the virus from various infected tissues by using virus-free insects. The percentage of virus recovery from the susceptible 'TN 1' and 'ADT 31' plants was greater than from moderately resistant 'IR 50' and resistant 'TNAU 831520'. In the susceptible 'TN 1' and 'ADT 31', a greater percentage of Nephotettix virescens acquired the virus from the young leaves showing interveinal chlorosis followed by leafsheath and orange leaf. In the moderately resistant 'IR 50' cultivar, also the leaves with interveinal chlorosis were the best source. The virus recovery from resistant 'TNAU 831520' was also low and only 15 per cent of insects could acquire the virus from the leaf sheath and orange-coloured leaves, which had maximum virus content. From the resistant plants, the least percentage of insects was able to acquire the virus.
