With the purpose to characterize the potassium in acid soils; to establish the relationships between the different forms and other soil properties (clay, mineralogy) and its state before the potassic fertilization; a greenhouse experiment was conducted with two soils from Cojedes State: El Pao (Fluventic Haplustults) and INAGRO (Inceptisol). The samples were air dried and analized. The corn was used like the test plant, with seven treatments and three replications. The treatments were 0-40-80-160-240-320 kg/ha K2O, all of them with a basic fertilization; an absolute control was included. Both of two soils have 96 ppm of available potassium, but the potassium fixation capacity in INAGRO soil is greater than El Pao; probably due at the highest clay content and the presence of Vermiculite in the first soil. The crop response to potassic fertilization was different in both soils; in El Pao there was no response; in INAGRO it was significant. In both soils the correlation between treatments and potassium absortion by the crop was highly significant and the same for the correlation between dry matter yield and potassium absortion in INAGRO soil. In El Pao this correlation was low and negative.
