Reasons for soil respiration rate decreasing after nitrigen application were found in a short-term laboratory experiment with 14C glucose. The yield of biomass per substrate (Y) unit was determined for "in situ" growing microorganisms. Glucose utilization efficiency did not change by nitrogen application, whereas the microbial biomass reutilization efficiency distinctly differed dependent on N content of microbial cells. Y value equalled 0.61 in case of N-amendment and to 0.5 in case of N deficiency.
