In a field trial a newly developed inliner for beer tanks, made up of a plastic film covered with a gas tight layer of ethylvinyl alcohol, was tested. In a ten-week trial four 10 hl beer tanks, kept in a cool storage cell, were simultaneously filled with the same kind of beer. Two of the tanks were put under constant carbon dioxide pressure of 2 bar, the two others under compressed air pressure. One of each pair was lined with a conventional polyethylene bag, the other one with the new inliner. The cool storage cell was kept at a constant temperature of 5-6 deg C. To asses gas permeability and its effects, the beer was periodically analysed for its oxygen and carbon dioxide content, temperature and reduction capacity. The results showed a much lower gas permeability for the new inliner than for the conventional bag.
