History of milk production in the world from ancient times to the present days is given. The development of milking equipment in Latvia is discussed. The dynamics of milk production depending on the changes of head number and productivity of cows in public and private sectors in the period of 1960-1990 is analysed. The problems of mechanical milking on private farms are considered.
