Comparative biomass yield of herbaceous vegetation in open grassland and on forest floor in temperate Himalaya.

Information on primary production and turnover parameters for grasslands of Himalaya is extremely scanty. The results of the present investigation on primary production of Himalayan temperate grasslands using harvest technique are described and a comparison of open grassland community characters, viz, density, frequency, abundance:frequency ratio importance value index and standing crop is made in Pinus roxburghii forest floor vegetation within the same area at different locations on north and southern relief. Heteropogon contortus (42.19%) and Chrysopogon fulvus (3.65%) are the dominant grasses of these habitats. About 93.50% of the annual above ground standing biomass is accumulated by the grasses alone. An average of about 59.96% of the total aerial system standing biomass is removed through harvest for hay while 40.22% remain on the ground. Underground parts contribute only 27% to the community standing crop.
