There have been a number of studies on the acceptance of a new hypoallergenic formula in Germany (HA), one of which has been published. One study in Dusseldorf was carried out on a rather small number of infants from families with high risk for atopic disease in order to test the immunologic safety of HA formula when used as a prefeeding formula before full lactation sets in. All that can be said at the present stage of the trial is that these preliminary data show a trend which seems to point to a certain protective effect, or whatever it is, of HA formula toward manifestations of atopic disease in infants at risk. Further evidence will be presented when groups are large enough for statistical analysis.
