A trial lasting 56 days was carried out on 36 Italian Friesian cows in their third month of lactation in order to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative effects of the use of whole cotton seed on milk production. The use of 2 kg of whole cotton seed had no influence on the average milk production, but caused significant variation in milk composition; a reduction in the average protein content (-0.12%), an increase in the average lactose content (+0.14%) and important changes in the acidic composition of the milk fat. The suitability of the milk for cheese-making was evaluated using a tromboelastographic examination and was seen to be significantly lowered. The energetic balance of the cows fed diets containing whole cotton seed was better than that of the control group. The energetic value of the whole cotton seed was equal to 3.87 Mcal of ME per kg of dry matter.
