Mortality in captive cervids. Short communication.

The analysis of 300 recorded cases of death in 8 species of Cervidae. Most of the deaths were attributed to systemic ailments (49.67%), followed by environmental (17.00%), specific (15.33%), undetermined (14.33%) and miscellaneous (3.67%) entities. Of the various conditions pneumonia, debility and enteritis were the predominant causes of deaths. Only 3 cases of rabies were circumstantially suspected or diagnosed. There were only 4 cases of snake-bite, recorded only in spotted deer.
