Horticultural crops provide a regular source of income to small farmers. At the same time the state sector has commercialized many enterprises to supply commodities, predominantly fruits and vegetables to the domestic markets, whilst some exports help the country's external trade balance. Research efforts over the past few years have attempted to prioritize crops and programs in a manner that attendant constraints like inferior cultivars, traditional farming practices and pest and disease management problems have been partially improved. The lack of seed and planting materials in sufficient quantities and the absence of an effective technology transfer mechanism for this group of crops continue to be limitations. In the crop improvement research program, much headway has been made in identifying some superior cultivars of fruits, especially in the citrus group. To a lesser extent, some progress has been made on onion, tomato and hot pepper research, whilst the root and tuber crops subgroup has recorded substantial progress on Irish potato research. A long-term research strategy involving 17 priority commodities/crops is being planned to address the many unresolved problems in increasing both productivity and production.
