Characterization and Evaluation of Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor Moench (L.)] Germplasms Collected from Gambella.

Fifty eight sorghum germplasms as well as six checks were studied in 8 x 8 simple lattice design to investigate the variability that exists in morpho-agronomic characters (i.e. phenological, leaf, stem, head and seed characters as well as yield). The association of yield with its component has been determined. The study was conducted at three Institute of Agricultural Research Centers, namely: Jima, Bako, and Melkasa. The entries differ from each other for all characters except for days to emergence at Jima and Bako and for seed size at Melkasa. In this study wide range of variability has been observed among the germplasms for the morpho-agronomic characters studied, namely: days to flowering, days to maturity, leaf and stem characters, seed size, number of seed per head, 1000-seed weight, yield per plant and per plot. Yield was correlated positively and significantly with head weight, number of seeds per head, head width, and 1000-seed weight across locations. In this study number of seed per head was observed to be the component most highly correlated to yield. The correlation between head weight and yield was high at the three locations. However, the path analysis revealed the fact that the direct contribution of head weight was small. But it was the indirect effect via the number of seed per head which has contributed for the observed correlation between head weight and yield. The result of this study has indicated that directly and indirectly the number of seed per head was the most highly associated component with yield followed by 1000-seed weight across locations while seed was observed to have little effect.
