Effect of rate and frequency of MSG liquid waste application on chemical properties of ultisol soil, residues of iron, manganese, zinc, copper, chloride, and the yield of onion were investigated. The experiment was conducted at the experiment station of Lampung University in Tunjungan from March to June 1992. Treatment was arranged following a factorial (4 x 3) in a complete randomized block design. It has two factors. The first factor was dosages of MSG liquid waste application with 4 levels : 1. 0 l/ha (L0), 2. 2000 l/ha (L1), 3. 4000 l/ha (L2), and 4. 6000 l/ha (L3). The second factor was frequencies of MSG liquid waste application with 3 levels : 1. all applied at 3 days before planting (T1), 2. twice applied (50:50) at 3 days before planting and 2 weeks after planting (T2), and 3. 3-times applied (50:25:25) at 3 days before planting and at the second and fourth week after planting (T3). The total treatments were ten with 3 replications. The results showed that dosage and frequency of the MSG liquid waste application increased organic carbon content, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and iron and manganese contents; while it decreased exchangeable aluminium (Al-dd) and available zinc. However, it did not influence soil acidity, and contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and chloride. The application of the MSG liquid waste, moreover, increased the onion yield. Therefore, the MSG liquid waste has a potential to substitute synthetic fertilizers especially nitrogen fertilizers (urea and ZA). It also improved some soil chemical properties (CEC and organic carbon content); on the other hand, it has a potential to generate the problem of accumulation of micronutrients especially manganese. The best combination of dosage and frequency of the MSG liquid waste application was 6000 L/ha with a 3-time application.
