Effects of methods of culture on the quality of harvested shrimps (Penaeus monodon).

TPC's and Escherichia coli of pond waters were significantly affected by the culture method and stage of culture. The use of animal manure, particularly in EP [extensive method] affected the TPC and E. coli of water only before stocking. Microflora of pond water is not affected by the culture method. TPC's of shrimps were significantly higher than the TPC's of water. However, no correlation could be established between the microflora of shrimps with that of the pond water. Proximate composition of shrimps showed significantly higher protein and moisture contents on shrimps from IP [intensive method] while significantly higher fat content from EP.
