In the next 5-year National Development Plan, animal production, especially buffalo, will play a more important role in sustaining the stability of the economy which is largely based upon low domestic prices and competitive, primarily agricultural exports. Buffalo production has been the backbone of the agriculturally dependent Thai economy. However, there are many factors which influence production. The problem of low productivity of the buffalo can be broken up into four manageable problems - inadequate nutrition, poor health, low genetic potential and absence of effective marketing facilities. Research activities in order to solve the problems mentioned have been carried out effectively especially in the fields of reproduction and nutrition. In view of the research work on buffalo diseases, they need to be reviewed and actions towards management and control be taken to meet the country's interests. Besides, the lack of local infrastructure and the insufficiency of technical and financial resources of the country are also one of the factors which inhibit the progress of research in this field. The socioeconomic and ecological conditions, personnel as well as the possibility of conducting research must be taken into consideration.
