Individual progeny of a pseudocompatible inbred sugar beet population were analyzed for segregation with respect to two linked marker loci, Adh1 (alchol dehydrogenase) and Idh2 (isocitrate dehydrogenase). Gamete selection not associated with the Sa locus (self- and cross-incompatibility) but due to gametophytic factor Gal was detected; the action of this factor is evidently analogous to that of the gametophytic genes of corn and other self-compatible plant species. The relative arrangement of the four loci in the third sugar beet linkage group is Sa-Adh1-Idh2-Gal.
