The major chemical constituents: holocellulose, cellulose and lignin of barks from beech (Fagus moesiaca) and fir (Abies pectinata) were determined, as well as the extractive contents in benzene, ethanol, hot water and 1 NaOH. The relative ratio of major chemical constituents in the barks of here examined hardwood and softwood parallels that of respective woods. Phenolic acids plus Klason lignin determine the total aromatic content of the barks.
