Effect of inoculum levels of root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita) on Jute (Corchorus capsularis.).

A pot house experiment was conducted to study the effects of 5 levels of inocula of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) viz. 0, 10, 100, 1000 and 10000 larvae per plant on the severity of root galls and growth of jute plants (Corchorus capsularis). Seeds were sown in pots containing nematode free soil. Ten days after germination only two seedling were allowed to grow in each pot. Seedlings were inoculated with newly hatched second stage larvae of the nematode to have required levels of inocula. Seventy five days after inoculation the jute plants removed from the soil and data on shoot height, fresh weight of shoot and root, gall index and number of galls/g roots were recorded. Severity of root gall increased but plant growth decreased gradually with increasing levels of inocula. Reduction in shoot height was significant at the level of 100 larvae/plant but reduction in shoot weight were significant at 1000 larvae/plant. Significant reduction in root weight was resulted by the highest level of inocula. However, effect of the two higher levels on plant growth as well as severity of the disease was statistically similar.
