In an attempt to study differences in tuber yielding capacity among sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam), cultivars a field experiment was conducted at Jambegede Substation of Malang Research Institute for Food Crops during dry season, starting from June till October, 1983. Three sweet potato cultivars, Daya, Jonga, and Putri Selatan were grown, each using apical and subapical cuttings respectively. Treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. Daya cultivar, one of the recommended high yielding varieties, was a hybrid between Jonga and Putri Selatan cultivar, with the latter as female parent. Dry matter distribution was analyzed by measuring organ dry weight, i.e. leaf blades, petioles, stems, and total tuber, as well as total plant dry weight. Result of the experiment indicated that superiority of Daya cultivar in producing tuber was associated with its ability to reduce dry matter allocation into stems. While for its parent, particularly Putri Selatan, stem acted as strong competitor to tuber in accumulating dry matter. Total plant dry matter productions among Daya cultivar and both of its parents were not significantly different. Using an apical cutting increased early tuber growth, but its role in determining final tuber yield was surpassed by the rate of tuber development. Therefore, the use of the apical or subapical cutting or mixture of both cuttings in yield test would not affect the tuber productivity.
