Trial was conducted at the Khon Kaen Field Crops Research Center in the dry season of 1986 evaluating the effectiveness of certain insecticides against groundnut thrips. Eight insecticides and an untreated control were compared in a randomized complete block experiment with four replicates. Plot size was 4x5 m. and spacing was 50x20 cm Groundnut was planted in January 1986, and insecticide application was done 70 days after emergence. For the individual plots, ten random hills were selected and the number of thrips were counted from every terminal leaves at 1 day before and at 1 and 12 days after insecticide spraying. Plants were harvested from the central 3.6x4.0 sq. meter from each plot for yield determination. Results revealed that prothiophos, monocrotophos, methomyl, triazophos, carbosulfan, alphamethrin and fenvalerate significantly reduced thrips population at one day after application. However, only monocrotophos was found effective in keeping a low thrips population until 12 days after spraying. Pod yields obtained from the treated and untreated plots were not significantly different indicating that in this experiment thrips did not cause a significant loss in groundnut yield.
