Nutrients and digestibility of roughages represent a wide range of variability which causes errors in energy calculation. The errors can be eliminated provided that regression equations are developed for each of these feeds. During this study, regression equations for alfalfa silages were constructed by the authors. The aim of the in vivo experiments, which were carried out using 17 alfalfa silages of different quality, was to determine energy content. On the basis of results regarding correlation between energy value in "in vivo" experiments and nutrients determined by Weende and detergent methods, the following can be concluded: DE, NEm, NEI and NEg of alfalfa silages were (determined by Weende analysis), taking into consideration dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre and ash content were predictable with the correlation of r=0.814-0.833. The application of NDF, ADF and ADL in calculations did not prove significantly better in comparison with that of quadratic equations containing crude fibre using the Weende method. The correlation was r=0.818-0.834. The energy values predicted by regression equations were in closer correlation, r=0.817-0.840 with the energy content determined in vivo than those calculated by standard digestion coefficients which show a correlation of r=0.687-0.759.
