Zimbabwe country profile: status of seed pathology and seed health testing.
1991
Mathur S.B.
The purpose of this report is to present a country profile on: the status of seed pathology and seed health testing in different institutions in Zimbabwe; future needs of training of Zimbabweans; strenghtening of seed health testing facilities in relevent insitutions and formulation of research projects on important seed-borne diseases of major crops. The report gives an outline of its main observations, that there is a general awareness on yield losses which are caused by seed-borne diseases, including their role on seed quality. Seed quality of seed-lots meant for sowing is routinely judged by seed moisture, purity and germination by Seed Services of the Department of Research and Specialist Services. Seed health testing which is an equally important component seed quality is not practiced because of shortage and inadequacy of seed health testing facilities and equipment. Recommendations are explicitly outlined in the report to improve the situation.
