Efficacy of mass trapping systems in reducing Dacus oleae population was examined in olive orchards at Tanagra (Boeotia) during 1982 and 1983. Sticky or insecticide-treated yellow traps were used baited with Dacus oleae sex pheromone and ammonium carbonate. In 1982, a year of low Dacus oleae population densities due to unfavourable weather conditions for olive fruit fly reproduction, application of the trapping systems in relatively isolated orchards gave olive fruit protection comparable to that achieved with bait sprays applied from the air. In 1983, when Dacus oleae population was higher than in 1982, combined use of the same attractants on insecticide-treated yellow traps was sufficient to reduce significantly fruit infestation. This year the trapping system was compared to untreated controls; bait sprays were not applied in the area as fruit setting of the trees was generally poor. The use of insecticide-treated traps baited with Dacus oleae pheromone and ammonia releasing sources seems therefore to be a practical method with good potential for olive protection.
