Soaking seeds with organic solvents such as petroleum ether could eliminate insect infestation, reduce seed moisture content and increase uniformity of seedling. However, seed germination was affected by the treatment. Seeds of sweet corn and yard long bean were presoaked in petroleum ether for one hour to 17 weeks or more and germinated on germinating paper. Germination of sweet corn seeds decreased with the increase in soaking time. The germination percentage dropped from 92 % in the control to 54 and 38 % after 21 days and 17 weeks of the treatment, respectively. Yard long bean seeds retained their germination ability at 96 % after presoaking for about 30 days and fell to 37 % after 17 weeks.
