Varietal resistance of seven soybean lines (SJ 4, SJ 5, G 2105, G2102, G3473, G 8506 and G 3818) to Southern green stink bug (Nezara viridula L.) was studied. The experiments were carried out both under field and laboratory conditions at Kampaengsaen Campus, Nakhon Pathom. Only G 3473 and G 8506 showed moderate resistance to the Southern green stink bug. The seed damage due to green stink bug for two planting seasons on the above-mention soybean lines was 23.69, 25.39 and 29.24 %, respectively, whereas the seed damage of susceptible SJ 4 and SJ 5 was 62.42 and 67.57 %. The study of resistance mechanism was based on the number of insect punctures on soybean pods, growth rate of insect nymph and the rate of insect mortality. Non-preference and antibiosis played a major role in resistance mechanisms in the three soybean line to Southern green stink bug. Number of hair on soybean pod indicated a negative correlation with number of insect punctures on soybean pods in laboratory condition.
