The avifauna of Europe shows a decrease in populations and in the number of species. The impact of pesticides is often presumed to be one of the causes for this development. To prove this assumption, a detailed knowledge of the application of pesticides is needed. In order to obtain this information, data from two surveys on the application of pesticides in agriculture and forestry were carried out. The highest rate of pesticide application is found in areas with intensive agriculture. Pastures and forests are treated at a very low rate. The period of application often coincides with the breeding season of birds. Future investigations must show if there is a causal relation between the application of pesticides and the decrease in bird populations or in number of species. The data on the application of pesticides in cultivated areas presented in this study should be used as a basis for such investigations.
