Yield verification on the use of calcium carbide: as sprouts stimulator.

Highland grown potato tubers and stored for three weeks were treated for 14 days in polyethylene bags with calcium carbide (CaC2) at the rates of 0, 5, 10 and 20 g to a kilogram of tubers. These were planted two months later. The tubers obtained at maturity were kept and planted for the second cropping. Calcium carbide significantly influenced sprouting and yield performance. Significantly higher percentage of sprouted tubers, profuse and longer apical sprouts were obtained from CaC2-treated tubers. The lowest number of sprouts was obtained from Agria and dark stored Granola tubers. Yields among cultivars obtained in the two plantings were comparable. The use of 5 g CaC2/kg potato proved to be the best concentration. This gave 37.1% additional income at the first planting when computed on a hectare basis and 21.3% when the harvest was kept for seeds and planted the next cropping. Yield from seed tubers treated with 10 and 20 g CaC2/kg potatoes was comparable to that of the control with only 12.6 and 12.7% added benefit in the first year (Y1) and a negative net return in the second year (Y2). This result implies that excessive use of calcium carbide is not advisable. A significantly high percentage of large tubers (super, extra-large, and large) were obtained from Famosa and Agria.
