Extract: According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 1979 Vegetable Pesticide Survey, approximately 1.3 million pounds of pesticides were used to control weeds, insects, diseases and nematodes on 10 vegetable crops in New York and New Jersey. The 10 vegetable crops include cabbage, carrots, celery, cucumbers, green peas, lettuce, onions, snap beans, sweet corn, and tomatoes. Approximately 825,000 acre-treatments were made ranging from 262,000 for sweet corn to 700 for carrots.
