New results concerning powdery mildew resistance genes in German wheat cultivars.

The identification of powdery mildew resistance genes was carried out as described before by Heun and Fischbeck (1987a,b). All recently released German winter and spring wheat cultivars were analysed. The results are summarized in Table 1. Together with earlier published data, it becomes evident that the powdery mildew resistance genes Pm2, 4b, 5, 6 and 8 are common in winter wheat, whereas Pm1, 2, 4b, 5, 6, 9 and Mlk are present in spring wheat. The same holds true in breeding lines which have been evaluated until 1989. An overlapping concerning resistance genes being present in either crops is found for Pm2, 4b, S and 6. The proof for the existence of powdery mildew resistance genes highly depends on the chosen/available mildew isolates: e.g. Pm9 can only be detected with powdery mildew isolate no. 6 (compare with Heun and Fischbeck 1987b), since this isolate has virulence for Pml and 2, but not for 'Normandie' carrying Pm9 in addition to Pml and 2. (New results about the inheritance of Pm9 in relation to Pml and 2 will be published soon. Schneider et al. in prep.). At present the occurrence of Pm4b in combination with Pm2 and Pm8 cannot be verified with our powdery mildew isolates. According to pedigree relationships this gene may occur in 'Arber'. Therefore, Pm4b is shown in parenthesis for this genotype (Table 1). All our data are made available to plant breeders, phytopathologists and farmers by publishing them every year in the "Beschreibende Sortenliste", Verlag Alfred Strothe.
